Facebook has a problem: to exist, it needs to serve ads to users — the more with video, the better. But what happens when the users are in countries like India, Nigeria and the Phillippines, where video hogs expensive bandwidth that few people can afford?
Overseas expansion has proven to be a huge driver of growth for Facebook: the company now makes more than half of its advertising revenue from outside the United States. And according to the company, people in countries like Kenya, Nigeria and Colombia tend to view ads more favorably than those in more developed parts of the world.
So Facebook isn't giving up on ads. It's just going to approach them differently — instead of glamorous, fast-paced movies, more like old-school flipbooks.
